Nearly colorless or slightly yellow, transparent, viscous, flammable liquid. It is a non-drying oil and is miscible with absolute ethanol, ether, chloroform, and glacial acetic acid. It has a peculiar odor.
Used in the manufacture of plasticizers, dibasic acids, polyurethane coatings, rubber, adhesives, fatty acids, surfactants, insulating oils, hydraulic oils, lubricating oils, Turkey red oil, soap, polyamide-11 fibers, etc. Dehydrated castor oil yields a conjugated double-bond drying oil. Hydrogenation under different conditions yields various products, making it widely used in various industrial sectors. Medicinal castor oil is an irritant laxative. It acts mainly on the small intestine and is used as a purgative.
